  Travertine is often used as a building material for paving patios, garden paths, pool surrounds and throughout homes. The stone is characterised by pitted holes and troughs in its surface that occur naturally over many years. Some installers use grout to fill these holes, whereas others leave them unchanged. Travertine can be purchased filled or unfilled. It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish and is available in a variety of colours.
